This month, we'll be reading&nbsp;Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H.

About the Book:&nbsp;When Lamya is fourteen, she decides to disappear. It seems easier to ease herself out of sight than to grapple with the difficulty of taking shape in a world that doesn't fit. She is a queer teenager growing up in a Muslim household, a South Asian in a Middle Eastern country. But during her Quran class, she reads a passage about Maryam, and suddenly everything shifts: if Maryam was never touched by any man, could Maryam be... like Lamya?

Written with deep intelligence and a fierce humour, Hijab Butch Blues follows Lamya as she travels to the United States, as she comes out, and as she navigates the complexities of the immigration system - and the queer dating scene. At each step, she turns to her faith to make sense of her life, weaving stories from the Quran together with her own experiences: Musa leading his people to freedom; Allah, who is neither male nor female; and Nuh, who built an ark, just as Lamya is finally able to become the architect of her own story. Raw and unflinching, Hijab Butch Blues heralds the arrival of a truly original voice, asking powerful questions about gender and sexuality, relationships, identity and faith, and what it means to build a life of one's own.

Queer Book Club – July Edition

What books will we be reading?

Each Saturday morning session features carefully chosen books, read aloud in an engaging and interactive way. Expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere where little listeners can explore stories, discover new characters, and spark their love for reading. Please note, the event will be held in English.

This event is free to attend, but we ask that you&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eventbrite.pt/e/kids-storytime-good-company-bookstore-tickets-1428933983009?aff=oddtdtcreator">register free tickets in advance</a>&nbsp;so we know how many little bookworms to expect. Please select how many adults and children will be attending. If you can't make it, please ensure you cancel your ticket so others can join.

We'll pick two of our favorite children's books that are available in our bookstore. If you have any suggestions, let us know on the day!

Nothing at all - just bring your curiosity and love for stories! If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or cozy blanket, they’re welcome to bring it along for extra comfort.

Whether they’re early readers, book lovers, or just beginning their literary journey. We welcome parents, caregivers and children of all ages to join us and enjoy the experience together. Please note, the event will be held in English.

Contemporary Book Club – July Edition

Join us for a laid-back evening of laughs in the cozy bookstore wine bar, Good Company Bookstore, hosted by the always-hilarious&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/actual.lx.standup/" target="_blank">Actual LX Standup</a>. It’s the kind of night where you can sip a glass of wine, nibble on some artisan snacks, and hear someone tell their first-ever joke - or their best one yet.

Our host, Gui Sancho, will open the floor and kick things off with a set. Then the mic will be open to anyone who wants to try some stand-up! Whether you’ve been doing comedy for years or it’s your first time touching a mic, you’re welcome here. Just show up and put your name in the hat.

Anyone who likes to laugh. Performers, friends of performers, book lovers, wine drinkers, curious wanderers - all welcome. No pressure, just good company and a good time!

Comedy Open Mic

Join us at Good Company Books for an intimate evening of live music, where storytelling and melody come together in a cosy bookshop setting. With a glass of wine in hand, settle in and let two incredible artists transport you with their heartfelt performances. Whether you're here to discover new music, unwind after a long day, or simply enjoy good company, this promises to be a special night.

<a href="https://www.instagram.com/leeshortforleee/" target="_blank">Lee Squires&nbsp;</a>is a Lisbon-based songwriter that transforms dry wit into heartfelt folk songs. Born in Essex and now based in Lisbon for many years, Lee's lyrics reflect a background in screenwriting and comedy, blending dry wit with introspection. His solo debut Good Team dropped in early 2025, gaining national radio play and over 10k streams in its first week. Recently, he’s drawn inspiration from Lisbon’s rock and blues scene, adding upbeat rhythms to his live sets. With his first EP on the way, his sound nods to Dylan and modern Americana, while staying rooted in British songwriting and the Portuguese community he now calls home.

<a href="https://www.instagram.com/melysmusique/" target="_blank">Mélys</a>&nbsp;is tinged with indie-folk tones, sometimes even leaning towards rock. Navigating between English and Spanish, her soft, husky voice takes us to those precious moments when the mind wanders and is carried away by melancholy. Her floral folk opens the door to a world where acoustics and electronics merge to make way for other sounds. A musical setting where singer-guitarist-composer Mélys draws her lyrics from the emotions and sensations that the organic world makes her feel.

7.00pm - Doors open. Grab a drink and say hello before the music starts.

7.15pm - The music will begin shortly. Chairs are first come, first serve but we also have plenty of standing and floor seating space available. Two artists will perform with a short interval in between.

9.00pm - The show should be finished but we would love for you to stay for a drink, browse our bookshop and enjoy our esplanada.

Live Music Night with Lee Squires & Mélys

Join us for an evening of poetry, creativity, and community at Good Company Bookstore, with our welcoming host,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/angelique_neu" target="_blank">Angelique Neumann.</a>&nbsp;Whether you're a poet, a poetry lover, or simply curious, this is an opportunity to share words, listen, and connect with fellow literary enthusiasts.

The evening will begin with a few readings from Angelique before we open the floor to the open mic, for anyone who wishes to share their poetry in a warm and welcoming environment.

If you’d like to perform, please prepare 1 or 2 poems, ideally originals. Both English and Portuguese poetry are welcome. Not a performer? No problem! You’re more than welcome to attend and enjoy the readings as part of the audience.

This event is for anyone with a love of poetry - whether you’re a seasoned poet, an aspiring writer, or simply a poetry enthusiast who enjoys listening to spoken word.

Open Mic Poetry

Wine lovers, mark your calendars! On Saturday, July 26th, Mário Marques from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/whoswine/">Who's Wine</a> is taking over Good Company’s bar for an epic wine experience.

Drop by between 4-9 PM and dive into the world of low-intervention wines. Mário, a sommelier, co-founder of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/whoswine/">Who's Wine</a>, and Good Company regular, is passionate about small producers who truly love their land, respect nature, and produce stunning wines you won’t find anywhere else. And he’s bringing some of his favorite bottles to share with you!

You can expect a casual evening of fantastic low-intervention and natural wines, fun stories around the bar, and maybe a touch of Kerouac-style spontaneity (note: Kerouac not provided). Mário will be behind the bar from 16:00, so come by anytime to taste, chat, and have a good wine-fueled time.

Just don’t expect a formal lecture; this is more like hanging out with a wine-obsessed friend who can’t wait to share their latest discoveries.
