Círculo de Poesia

Join us for an interactive and fun reading for your kids on Saturday morning!

Our Saturday morning session features carefully chosen books, read aloud in an engaging and interactive way. Expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere where little listeners can explore stories, discover new characters, and spark their love for reading.

This event is hosted in English, but all kids are welcomed! Our host Lia speaks Portuguese too!

This event is free to attend, but we ask that you register your free tickets in advance so we know how many little bookworms to expect. Please select how many adults will be attending. If you can't make it, please ensure you cancel your ticket so others can join.

We'll pick two of our favorite children's books that are available in our bookstore. If you have any suggestions, let us know on the day!

Nothing at all - just bring your curiosity and love for stories! If your child has a favorite stuffed animal or cozy blanket, they’re welcome to bring it along for extra comfort.

Whether they’re early readers, book lovers, or just beginning their literary journey. We welcome parents, caregivers and children of all ages to join us and enjoy the experience together. Please note, the event will be held in English.

Kids Storytime 

Grab your book and your coffee, it's book club time with your host, Leonor Galão at Good Company Bookstore!

We meet on Sunday mornings, once a month, to talk about&nbsp;memory and identity. Reading the book fully is encouraged, but if you haven't finished it, or you've lost the habit of reading altogether, why not give this book club a chance? Come as you are, whether you've read every page or just want to hear people talk about a good book over coffee.

Since I learned how to read, I've been carrying a book with me; it's just how I've always moved through the world. I run&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/a_raposa_matreira_/" target="_blank">@a_raposa_matreira_</a>, a bookstagram where I share what I'm reading and talk about books across cultures. I've organised book clubs in Italy, and they taught me that nothing is as special as bonding over a book.

The Renovation&nbsp;by Kenan Orhan&nbsp;follows Dilara, a Turkish exile living in Italy, as her family unravels around her father's declining health and a home renovation that doesn't go as planned. It's a novel that beautifully explores memory, identity, and migration, and what it means to lose a home, whether through political change or through the act of leaving itself. What do you keep from a homeland once you've moved on from it? How do you change as a person, seeing your own reality from somewhere else entirely? A personal favourite, and a book that perfectly explores both themes of the book club.

Book Club on Memory & Identity

This intimate workshop, led by author Keturah Kendrick, is an exploration of finding your voice in a world designed to silence it.

The Workshop focuses on a group discussion of Black feminist writer&nbsp;Audre Lorde’s essay,&nbsp;Your Silence Will Not Protect You.

Author and speaker, Keturah Kendrick, will guide participants through reading an excerpt of the essay. Choosing key words and phrases from the text, Kendrick will then provide participants with writing prompts that encourage thoughtful analysis of the desires and passions that sit quietly in the shadows of many women’s lives. Those expressions women relegate to silence because saying them out loud proposes too great a threat to the safety of acceptance.

Keturah Kendrick is an author, speaker and thought leader. Her work explores the nuances of living life as a Black woman who consciously rejects much of what society and culture expects of her. In&nbsp;No Thanks: Black, Female, and Living in the Martyr-Free Zone, she chronicles her challenges and reflections on living while Black, woman, single and childfree around the globe. In&nbsp;And You Know This: Lessons on Living from Young Folx, she turns to the power of intergenerational dialogue and shares invaluable insights on young adulthood from youth navigating life in these complex times. In&nbsp;Finding Your People, she provides an accessible road map for intentionally building community as a seasoned woman in a new stage of life. Kendrick has shared her insights on travel, community building, and the interior lives of Black women on numerous podcasts and media outlets. She is currently an Alice Nelson Dunbar fellow with&nbsp;The Lighthouse: Black Girl Projects. A freelance writer, her work has appeared in&nbsp;NBC News,&nbsp;Newsweek,&nbsp;USA Today,&nbsp;Business&nbsp;Insider,&nbsp;MS Now, and&nbsp;The Huff Post.&nbsp;A world traveler and serial expat, Kendrick currently resides in Lisbon, Portugal.

Classics Book Club

Come celebrate Guinea-Bissau's Independence Day with writer and photographer Ricci Shryock at Good Company Bookstore!

Set during Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde's eleven-year war for independence from Portuguese colonial rule,The Moon Will Not Burn Us&nbsp;tells the extraordinary true story of Joana Gomes, who joined the liberation struggle at just thirteen years old after the murder of her father. Under the leadership of Amílcar Cabral, Joana and other women helped wage a war that contributed to the end of a century of colonial rule, personified the struggle between the Soviet Union and the West, and sparked a revolution in Portugal. While the conflict transformed history, the women who fought it were largely unknown.

The Moon Will Not Burn Us&nbsp;is also a critical meditation on women's place in historical records. It invites readers to re-examine whose voices have shaped our understanding of history and what is lost through erasure.

Ricci Shryock&nbsp;is a writer and photographer who has been working on documentary narratives in West Africa for nearly 20 years. Her debut book,&nbsp;The Moon Will Not Burn Us, draws from years of reporting to tell the little-known-history of the women who helped win one of Africa's longest liberation wars.

Karyna Gomes&nbsp;is a singer, songwriter, journalist, and communication and culture specialist from Guinea-Bissau. Through music, storytelling, and cultural initiatives, she builds bridges between Africa and the world, fostering dialogue, preserving memory, and celebrating African identities. She is an acclaimed voice in Lusophone music and serves as Music Curator for the Biennial of Art and Culture of Guinea-Bissau (MoAC Biss).

Open Mic Poetry

Join us with your kids for a creative and fun Art Workshops on Sunday morning at Good Company Bookstore!

Our workshop arises as an extension of the reading sessions that take place on Saturday mornings at&nbsp;Good Company Bookstore. The objective is to give body to the inner world of each participant, whether from the stories heard the previous week or from the need to transpose their own fantasies into shapes, colors, and textures.

A single thread is just a thread. But a thread intertwined with many others can become something special. In this workshop, we will experiment with creating a small weaving sample using a pre-warped cardboard loom.Each participant will weave yarn through to build their own textile pattern, taking the finished piece home at the end. There will also be a simpler alternative made entirely of paper to explore crossing strips.

Note: This workshop is not recommended for children under 6 years old, as the exercise requires fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for handling the threads.

The event has a cost of 7 euros (+tax). We ask that you make the reservation in advance so we can prepare enough materials for all the little artists. Please select how many adults will accompany. If you cannot attend, we ask that you cancel your ticket so that others can join.

Each session is unique and offers a structured script, designed to guide each child in the exploration of the contours of their imagination. We are going to discover different themes, techniques, and supports in each encounter. Here, we demystify the idea of "not having a knack" or "I can't" and we celebrate experimentation as an essential part of the process.

Nothing special, just bring your curiosity! We provide all the necessary materials to materialize ideas into physical creations.

This workshop is not recommended for children under 6 years old, as the exercise requires fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for handling the threads.&nbsp;

The project is open to suggestions! Our hostess, Margarida, will be attentive to the tastes and proposals of each child, in order to shape her offer to our little artists.

Kids Art Workshop: Weaving Workshop "Criss Cross"

Welcome to the Cookbook Club hosted by Francine Lon at Good Company Bookstore!

Join our Cookbook Club where we create a relaxed, welcoming way to discover new dishes, learn from one another, and celebrate a shared love of cooking and books!

Each month, we gather to explore a new cookbook together. Once the book is chosen, every participant selects a recipe that catches their interest and prepares it at home. You’re encouraged to make the recipe by yourself!

Feel free to add your personal touches, substitutions, or creative twists.

When we meet, everyone brings their dish to share, creating a table full of diverse interpretations from the same cookbook. Our gatherings take place at Good Company Bookstore, where we enjoy the food, exchange ideas, and talk about what worked (or didn’t!) in each recipe.

I'm Francine, originally from the Philippines, with over ten years of experience in the hospitality industry. My career began in the United States, where I studied Baking &amp; Pastry Arts and gained my first Michelin-star restaurant experience in New York. From there, I moved to London, continuing my work in Michelin-starred kitchens for more than six years. Later, I co-opened a café in Paris with my sister, gradually transitioning from pastry chef to barista. Today, I'm the café manager at Good Company, where I collaborate on menu development, bake cakes in the mornings, and prepare coffees for our guests.

To secure your place, you must purchase a ticket, which can be used as a voucher for a drink at the bar on the day of the event.&nbsp;

After you sign up you will receive via email a Recipes Sheet for our Cookbook Club. Please add your name, chosen recipe, and any dietary restrictions in the appropriate section (Appetisers, Mains/Sides, or Desserts).

This system helps us avoid duplicate dishes, ensures a well-balanced spread across the table, and allows everyone to be aware of any dietary restrictions or allergies so that we can all enjoy the meal safely and comfortably.

From gods taking revenge to kings killing their sons, from political assassinations to crimes of passion, this is a journey through the darker side of art. Why have artists kept turning murder, betrayal and punishment into images...

About the Book:&nbsp;This powerful collection of stories, set in the mid-West among the lonely men and women who drink, fish and play cards to ease the passing of time, was the first by Raymond Carver to be published in the UK.

The entire collection will be open to discussion, but we will particularly focus on the title story, which is set around a table where the characters all discuss what their personal definition of “love” is based on their past experiences. It’s a deeply profound story that gets at the root of love, loss, relationships, and the struggle to communicate these feelings and experiences to one another through language.

Short Story Book Club

On October 2,&nbsp;Dizzy Wines&nbsp;returns to&nbsp;Good Company Books&nbsp;to explore a Douro that sits slightly outside the official guidebook.

Rafaela Pires is a Human Rights and Community Development professional from Portugal, with a background in International Relations, Human Rights and Social Education and Community Intervention. She has been working in civil society and the NGO sector since the age of 18, with a particular focus on human rights education, gender equality, social inclusion and youth participation. She is also the founder of Educar para a Liberdade, an educational project that uses social media to promote critical thinking and make Human Rights, equality and social justice more accessible, encouraging people to question the world around them and understand education as a tool for freedom and social transformation.
