Join us for an evening of books, conversation, and community at our Lusophone Book Club.
Here at Good Company, we are passionate about translations, especially of Lusophone authors. That's why we wanted to start this book club, to further our community by exploring the multicultural literary traditions, and the beauty of the Portuguese language.
Book of the Month
This month, we'll be reading The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas by Machado de Assis.
About the Book: Machado de Assis is not only Brazil's most celebrated writer but also a writer of world stature. In his masterpiece, the 1881 novel The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (also translated as Epitaph of a Small Winner), the ghost of a decadent and disagreeable aristocrat decides to write his memoir. He dedicates it to the worms gnawing at his corpse and tells of his failed romances and half-hearted political ambitions, serves up hare-brained philosophies and complains with gusto from the depths of his graveWildly imaginative, wickedly witty and ahead of its time, the novel has been compared to works by Cervantes, Sterne, Joyce, Nabokov, Borges and Calvino, and has influenced generations of writers around the world.
Get Your Copy: Readers are welcome to read in both the Portuguese original and the English translation, allowing for a dynamic discussion that encompasses not only the book's themes but also translation as a topic in itself. Copies of the English translation are available for purchase both in-store and on our website. If you would like to read it in Portuguese, we encourage you to visit one of the many wonderful independent bookstores around Lisbon.
