Join us at Good Company Bookstore for an Art Exhibition Opening, featuring the work of an artist Matilde Estevens (til.archives)!
The Exhibition ARQUIVO 01
ARQUIVO 0.1 is the first exhibit of the til archives project (@til.archives) created in 2024 by the author Matilde Estevens. With a begining in crochet, a skill passed on by her grandmother, the artist's work expandes through photography stop motion animation, illustration and graphic design (her trained field). The exhibit comes from a return to the pieces that make up the archive that, now taken from its expected context, suggest different body parts, such as the spinal cord, the shoulders, arms and breasts. Between abstraction and representation, the pieces are observed in a state permeable to interpretation. No longer just a technique or a static object, crochet functions as matter in visual experimentation, establishing relations with body, clothing and iconography. More than the reunion of past objetcs, this exhibit showcases the continuous nature of the creative process: an archive not only for safekeeping and maintenance, but one that holds change.
About the Artist
Matilde Estevens (@til.archives) is a designer-artist, with a Bachelor's in Graphic Design at the College of Fine Arts in Lisbon and an artistic educational starting point in Escola Artística António Arroio. Hers is a multidisciplinary practice that crosses languages and mediums such as crochet, image, stop motion animation and illustration. Her work comes from her interest to bring crochet closer to visual forms of communication, exploring shape, texture, color and graphic elements as her first alphabet. Through crossing manual and visual processes she originates images that combine crochet, photography, illustration and animation. Clothing, body and mundane objects serve as starting points when exploring ways to represent, transform and communicate an idea.
