In her exhibit Terras de Pano, Márcia Mendes handles string as relational technology and looks for a practice where gesture no longer produces objects, but rather ways of being. She finds in weaving and embroidery choreographies that restructure thought and feeling. For there is repetition.
Resignification with repetition. What is the repetition for?
For her liking of things, that carries her from land to land, port to port, stitch to stitch. Keeping the scale loyal to the journey: lightweight. The lines and strings gain shape in the unsubmissive care of hands that try to be and to leave. The loom was the first machine able to read in black and white, while women revealed themselves a creature able to turn the gestures which captured her into gestures of being.
I repeat: to weave.
About the Artist
Márcia Mendes is a Portuguese artist working with installation, performance, and collaborative practices. She holds a degree in Fashion and Textile Design from the School of Applied Arts of Castelo Branco, and has worked as a textile teacher at the Artistic School António Arroio in Lisbon. Teaching became an important space for reflection and experimentation, leading her to explore the performative aspects of textiles, not only as materials, but as tools for interaction.
She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Contemporary Art Practice at the Bern University of the Arts, in Switzerland, and investigates the ways in which body, textile, and technology relate, developing new territories of confrontation and reconnection.

By Bus: There are many convenient bus options 2 blocks away from us on Avenida República, with the closest stop to our store being Campo Pequeno-Av. Republica.
By Bike: If you're using the Gira public bicycles, there is a docking station right across the street (#431 - Rua do Arco Cego / Av. Magalhães Lima).
By Car: There is a paid parking lot across the street, between Rua Arco do Cego and Rua Dona Filipa de Vilhena. Street parking is also available around the neighborhood.
