This workshop is made of 3 sessions and is meant for anyone who wants to tell a story, gather up some thoughts, list a number of facts or just pile up ideas. The goal is to take time to research our own “cork boards”, and turn each finding into something meaningful and tangible. A zine is a playful, cheap and powerful way of doing so: you can copy it as many times as you like, give it as a gift, sell it, swap it with fellow ziners, or just keep it as a self-souvenir. Most of all, this workshop is about cherishing your own gaze.
Each participant will be encouraged to follow and research their own gaze, writing down or drawing something that has recently caught their attention. The first goal is to spend time with our thoughts so as to turn them into some kind of narrative, which will then be the zine’s core. The second goal is to learn the main steps on how to create a zine/perzine and make your own master copy.
A note from your host:
Two of my favorite human skills are the acts of noticing and collecting things. Everyone has their own way of doing it. We are born with this set of abilities, just like we’re born with different fingerprints.
We don’t know why we notice certain things. It just happens. A broken voice on the telephone; a half-eaten apple left on a table; a funny sneeze; a missing tooth; a smiling socket; a group of swallows flying in circles. More often than not, we do nothing about it and we just let these sounds, images and sensations quietly pass by. But somewhere in our heads, there’s a cork board where we are slowly gathering some of these fragments of life. We give them meaning and, in turn, they give us meaning — we are the things we collect.
The fun part happens when we start paying attention to what, how, and when we notice and collect. We begin to see patterns, to understand deeper meanings, and to consciously practice our curiosity. Just like adding post-its on a book, underlining sentences or taking notes. It is through noticing and collecting that we find and create new things.
