What can you expect from the salon?
This salon is an extension of the community created around the Lusophone Book Club - a space dedicated to discussing Portuguese-language authors and their work.
This time, we gather to talk about one of the most relevant figures in the Portuguese feminist movement: Maria Teresa Horta, an acclaimed poet, journalist, and activist. What do you need to bring?
We encourage you to bring a piece of writing centered around the theme of Desire and Defiance. You can bring:
- An essay or article
- A poetry collection or a single poem
- A short story or fiction excerpt
- Any text you feel fits the theme (including your own original work!)
While we highly suggest exploring Maria Teresa Horta's writing, texts by any author that fit the theme are warmly welcomed. You are also welcome to add a link to your chosen text here and share with others.
Formats we will be exploring and the rough timings for each:
- 6:00 PM | Opening: We will start with a reading of one of Maria Teresa Horta's poems in Portuguese, followed by its English translation.
- 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM | Group Reading: We will divide into smaller groups to share the texts we brought, dive into discussions, and exchange thoughts and ideas.
- 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Not-So-Silent Reading: We will rotate between groups to explore different texts. This segment opens up the space for more informal conversations, sharing collective memories of Maria Teresa Horta, or simply spending time in quiet reading.
- 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Open Mic: We will close the salon by reading our favorite poems on the theme of Desire and Defiance. A bilingual anthology of Maria Teresa Horta's poems will be provided.

By Metro: We're situated a 5-minute walk from the Campo Pequeno metro (Yellow line) and a 10-minute walk from the Alameda metro (Green & Red lines).
By Bus: There are many convenient bus options 2 blocks away from us on Avenida República, with the closest stop to our store being Campo Pequeno-Av. Republica.
By Bike: If you're using the Gira public bicycles, there is a docking station right across the street (#431 - Rua do Arco Cego / Av. Magalhães Lima).
By Car: There is a paid parking lot across the street, between Rua Arco do Cego and Rua Dona Filipa de Vilhena. Street parking is also available around the neighborhood.
