Blooming in the Desert
Benedetta Argentieri
Syria/Italy, Doc, 2020, 30’
Language: Kurdish, Arabic / Subtitles: English
The city of Raqqa has seen empires rise and fall over the centuries. After it was conquered by the Islamic State in 2013, violence and atrocities were committed on a daily basis, and women were forced to comply with strict sharia rules. In 2017, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) liberated the city and its surroundings. Raqqa was born again, and this time women were leading the change and building a new future. In the documentary we meet Maryam, who leads the Women’s Administration Office, Awaft, who works in the municipality, and Hind, a singer and musician, who can finally lead a band and perform in public concerts.
The documentary Blooming in the Desert, by Benedetta Argentieri, is screened as part of the travelling film programme Syria, the Unknown Women’s Revolution, organised by Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival.
The film serves as a starting point to explore the experience of radical democracy underway in North and Eastern Syria (Rojava) since 2012. It presents a project of concrete utopia grounded in women’s liberation, participatory democracy, interethnic coexistence, and ecology. A revolutionary experience at the heart of the Middle East, which places the liberation of all people in the dismantling of patriarchy.
The discussion will include activists from the Solidarity Platform with the Peoples of Kurdistan and other guests to be announced. The session is introduced and moderated by Silvia Di Marco, from Olhares do Mediterrâneo.
The session will be in English, but we’ll be glad to facilitate the participation of those who prefer to speak in Portuguese.
